One of the most prominent features of the Saint Peter’s Basilica is its dome. From afar it looks like a fitting crown for an already impressive church building. The dome is much like other church domes, but this one is quite large. Not the largest though but it is the tallest. While we were making our way to the basilica, we saw a queue of people who seemed to be heading to another part of the church. It seems there is an elevator somewhere. Apparently, it helps you go up the dome fast. You need to pay for the lift to go up. I don’t see any reason why we need to pay for that but people were queuing up for that. For people too stingy to pay for the lift, you can always walk. It is not a terribly long walk though.
The dome is quite wide and the stairs take you around the dome going up. There isn’t much to see yet on the way up but I expect it to be quite nice on top. This was a pleasant surprise for me since I didn’t know you can even go up the dome. I just hope that it is not yet crowded on top by the time we get there. I think it was more fun to walk up the dome rather than pay for the lift service. I don’t think it even goes all the way up. At some point you still have join everyone in walking up the dome. Maybe you just get there a little faster.
