After passing through what seems to be airport security, we were finally in the grounds of the Saint Peter’s Basilica. The Roma Pass gave us the privilege to bypass the queue of people who were waiting to get in the basilica. It is not a short queue by any means and you will probably wait a few hours just to be able to get in the basilica at that rate. If you have the cash to spare, I would recommend the purchase a ticket which allows you to bypass these queues, don’t waste your time. Now is a tricky part. Outside was actually the first queue to get in the restricted area. There is another short and faster queue to get in the basilica itself. I don’t know how long people linger in the basilica but it is huge so there should be a lot of space inside to handle all that people.
From the looks of it the basilica itself is almost as large as the square outside. Just outside the gates, you can get a real sense of how massive this basilica is. It is the largest church in the world and just being on the footsteps of the basilica already gives you an idea of how small you really are. It really feels like a palace and back in the day, popes were treated as monarchs. This is the seat of the Catholic church. Major ceremonies are held here including the recent canonizations of two popular popes. I will have more time to visit the basilica later, we will first explore other parts of the basilica.
