I love traveling by high-speed rail. It is like flying but arguably more convenient. How is that so? With high-speed rail, you get much more leg room than a plane. Granted that you have to pay more for this comfort, it still beats having to pay economy seats on a plane which tries to cram as many people as possible. Secondly, you don’t need to go through the whole troublesome check-in process. You only need to scan your tickets at a machine and you are checked in. There will be inspectors on board the train to make sure that you did. I don’t know if there is a fine if you don’t though. Thirdly, since the boarding procedure is much quicker, you only need to show up at the train station fifteen minutes before your departure, or less. This beats the two hours minimum time you have to go through immigration, customs and security.

Traveling from Venice to Rome via high-speed railway takes just over three hours. Although I’m sure that flying would still be faster, you still have to add the time for checking in, security and other stuff. Trains tend to be on time, I’m not sure how planes in Italy fare in terms of punctuality but the train we took left on time. There was a little delay because of some train in front though, but it wasn’t that bad. We arrived in Roma Termini railway station in no time. Much like the train station in Venice, it wasn’t very modern and I guess it doesn’t have to be. The trains are already very fast and state of the art. It would have been nice to have an ultramodern terminal.
