We just finished exploring what is one of Burano Island’s largest churches. Given how small Burano Island is, it was not really very practical to build a large church here. Apparently, there was no memo sent out not to build them too close together. When we stepped out of the Church of San Martino, I was surprised to see another church right beside it. This was was much smaller than the first church but it was still a bit redundant. This is the Oratorio di Santa Barbara or the Oratory of Saint Barbara. It is really the size of a house and it is quite simple. A step inside and you will see that this wasn’t a church but rather a chapel.
It is still laid out like a church. A few rows of pews facing the altar. It was surprisingly bright inside. From what I read, Holy Mass isn’t really celebrated here so it is really a chapel for prayer. It was actually quite charming as everything seemed to be quite nice. Maybe nice for a small, private wedding. Even though it was a chapel, it still has a small bell tower to the left of the building.
