We would be spending the next day traveling out of the island of Venice. No, we aren’t totally leaving Venice just yet. Venice is actually a small archipelago in the Venetian Lagoon. Some of these island are permanently inhabited as a result of continuous improvement done over the centuries. They are just tiny islands so they are pretty flat. It is not really surprising to see that the buildings in those islands share the characteristics of Venice itself. We wil be visiting a couple of island of Venice, also in part to escape the hordes of tourists which visit the main island. Hopefully, if we leave early enough there won’t be too many people there.
We took a ferry from the train station, think of these boats or vaporettos as taxis or buses. These water buses have fixed routes much like their land based counterparts. You need to pay attention to where you are going. The boarding of the vaporettos has an interesting system. Before you go to the boarding area, you need to tap your card to make sure you pay for the trip. You can get the vaporetto card from the tourist information booth just in front of the train station. I believe we only got a vaporetto ticket which was only good for that day. We didn’t really needed more than that since we will be leaving the next day. Anyway, remember to tap your card, else there might be inspectors on board and you might be fined.
