I enjoy walking around the city of Venice. There are numerous little streets where you can wander around in. Most of the traditional architecture has been preserved so it is a joy to just walk around. What is probably the best part is walking along the canals. The largest of these canals is the Grand Canal and it has been featured in countless tourism photos. Canals are part of the lives of the Venetians. The canals are the roads of the people of Venice and the have lived by it. It was quite interesting to see houses along the canals, big or small to have a door which opens to the canal. The waters seem to be clean enough but more importantly, the water is their way out of the house.
It is much like having a car outside your house. The people of Venice have boats which they use as cars. Step out of the house and into the boat and you are off. I thought that is a very unique side to living here in Venice. I wonder if you need to get a driving license for that. Along the more major canals there are still these boats but most of them are for tourism now. There are docks where people can hire gondolas to tour around Venice. It is probably one of the must do activities here but I personally don’t see much value in that. Unless my destination is in another island, I’d rather walk.
