I was absolutely delighted at how pretty Venice was. I was not exaggerating that I consider Venice to be one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to so far. The bright sunny weather also probably helped improve the colors. The waters of the Grand Canal were a nice blue green and the brighter the sun the better the colors were. I was grinning with delight at the sight of the view of the Grand Canal. There is a bridge which spans the Grand Canal near the train station. This was the Ponte degli Scalzi or the Bridge of the Barefoot. The bridge was surprisingly “only” built in the year 1934. For a city with such a long history, 1934 is very recent. This was because there was no real need for a bridge since most people just wanted to go through the Grand Canal to where they wanted to go. The bridge that was in use was the Rialto, but that is for another post.
Obviously, we won’t be using the vaporetto to travel all over Venice, the bridge is now more useful than ever. Thousands of people cross the bridge every single day. This is more because of the tremendous number of people who come here. From here you can have a very good look at the Grand Canal. Most photos of the Grand Canal are probably taken from this bridge. While it is not very wide, the Ponte degli Scalzi serves its purpose to allow people to walk and not boat from one side of the Grand Canal to the other.
