We already know that Provins was a medieval town. What exactly does that mean. Provins was a center of trade back then and it was made famous because of the fairs where were held in this town. Provins was known as a properous town and it was much, much busier than how it is right now. The rise of Provins probably started in 8th century and after three centuries, Provins has established itself as a center for trade and commerce. Back then it was like its own kingdom and it had it own currency which was recognized throughout medieval Europe. The grounds of Provins were suited for the fairs, with its wide roads and protective walls, it was a favored destination of merchants. The Fairs of Champagne were known throughout Europe and thus Provins prospered.
The walls of the medieval town of Provins, played a vital role in its prosperity. You can’t have commerce prosper if it is not safe to make a living. The walls of Provins are but a shadow of its old self but there are still large portions of the walls which remain intact. We already saw the walls when we were on our way to the tourist information center. The walls naturally served as the protection of the town and it most probably surrounded the town. The gate and the walls are part of the monuments which have survived for centuries after. There is still a lot of wall to explore here and we set off to explore these historic remains.
