Now that we are armed with the information on what to see in Provins, we head back to town for lunch. We noticed that the restaurants here weren’t very plentiful so we needed to get seats immediately. I realize that being the small tourist town it is, the restaurants available here would probably be very expensive and touristy. We don’t really have much choice in the matter, so we head back to the town square to hopefully find a place to see. We passed by a few restaurants in the square and we didn’t really know what to have here. I know next to nothing about French food apart from French fries.
In the end we chose this busy looking place named Le Petit Ecu. It was a restaurant in the town square and we just chose it because it happened to be the busiest one. We are hoping that the locals know more than we do. Unfortunately, it was not easy to communicate here. English only appears in the menu but the staff don’t speak English at all. However, contrary to French stereotypes, the staff was most friendly. Even the patrons were trying to help us. The table next to us had a Thai couple and one of them could speak French so they were helping us out as well. It was an adventure trying to order food here but the staff was extremely patient. One of my companions ordered steak, we know she was asking how she likes the steak but we didn’t know how to answer. The waitress then came up with the idea of knocking on the table to mean “well done”.
I got myself what seems to be a local specialty, it was crepe with pork belly and some intestine. I don’t know how local it really was but it was really good. I always thought of crepe as something for dessert but this was the first time I have it for lunch. For some reason, there was a black and white American flag on it. This is probably one of the reasons why French cuisine is is so renowned. The steak probably was a “safer” order, but I didn’t come all the way to France to have “mere” steak. Regardless, we were very satisfied with our meal. The crepe wasn’t terribly expensive, it cost me less than 20 euros. Not too bad for something that nice.
