One of the distinctive features of the Grand Trianon are the columns which line the front of the palace. The original palace was supposed to have been covered in white porcelain. It was a curious material to use for building and it seems they paid for it. Within two years the porcelain had degraded so badly that it needed to be replaced. It was also at this time that the palace was expanded. It seems to be a very common theme here at Versailles. The palace was constructed with much better material and it helped. The marble has helped keep the structure stable ever since. You can see it in the open area of the Grand Trianon.
The ionic columns hold everything up and it looks very elegant. It is nowhere near the opulence of the main palace, which made this place significantly less stressful. Although I don’t have to say wow each time I enter a new place. I think the Grand Trianon is still worth a visit. It is nice to compare the two palaces as its mere existence already provides an insight to the mind of the king.
