Royal Bed of Louis XIV at the Palace of Versailles

The Palace of Versailles is best known as the brain child of Louis XIV although it has already existed before this. It was Louis XIV who expanded the palace to enormous size. I had passed by a few bedrooms here but it seems the more important bedroom is here. It is just off the opulent Hall of Mirrors. This spot was selected as it faced the rising sun. Louis XIV, the Sun King, was a flamboyant person and he had the bedroom decorated with the usual gold. As a room, I though it was nice but as a bedroom, I don’t think gold really suits it. There was way too much gold color here and I don’t know how he can possible sleep like this. The bed is fenced off for some reason but you can still see the bed.

Curiously, the bed curtains were drawn and you couldn’t see much of the actual bed. The walls have small paintings as well but the ceiling was largely free of paintings for some reason. For such a flamboyant person, this bedroom is probably Louis XIV most private part of the palace. The royal bedroom also has ceremonies when the king rises and goes to sleep. I think it is taking too much work home with him. I would rather roll out of bed and struggle to get to work in my own time. Imagine having to wake up with your staff just waiting for you. You may be king but I don’t think it was a very comfortable life.
