The next hall in the already very impressive Palace of Versailles is probably one of the most well known features of the palace. The Hall of Mirrors is a display of total opulence that you really don’t know what to say. This is probably the highlight of a visit to the palace of Versailles so it probably pays to linger here a bit more. The hall here is so named because of the numerous mirrors which adorn the inner wall of the hall. This reflects the windows it faces giving the hall a brighter look. Interestingly, it seems that mirrors where a bit of a precious commodity back then. The Venetian Republic, modern day, Venice, monopolizes the manufacture of mirrors. It is at this point where France start to make mirrors by itself as everything needed to be locally sourced.
The result is this magnificent hall. The posts are decorated with marble and the ceiling is decorated with the, now, requisite painting. The paintings tell the story of Louis XIV and his achievements. There were also numerous chandeliers from the ceiling. It would not be difficult to imagine what this hall was used for. The hall is used for royal functions and subsequently, balls and banquets for dignitaries. No doubt anyone would be very impressed with this sight whether you are a dignitary having your dinner here or just a modern day tourist taking photos of what might be the most magnificent hall in the world.
