It is not very often that I would go into a room and just say “wow”. The rooms at the Palace of Versailles were jawdropping-ly beautiful. You can say that each single room is a work of art. Although a lot of the rooms have similar styles, they are still unique. In modern times, when designing a house, the ceiling probably gets the least attention. However, this is not the cast with the rooms in the Palace of Versailles. The ceiling is arguably the star of the show here. You are not really sure where to look when entering the rooms of the place. The design of the room is already very beautiful, but the paintings on the ceiling are just as nice if not better.
The paintings are normally of religious nature. Sometimes you have images of saints or angels from Christianity. There are also images of Roman gods and goddesses. The view here is consistently one of a person looking up into the heavens. So in this case the viewer is on earth and the image is an image of heaven from the bottom. This is a common theme for palaces and churches built in this era. They are truly a marvel to see.
