Our very late lunch that afternoon was a mere sandwich. This was exactly the stereotype of French food which I had in mind. While I do eat sandwiches, I still prefer “real” meals which are not prepared from a counter. Since this is Paris, I would expect such food to be pricey, hence the preference to sandwiches of the common folk. People are probably too busy here to prepare meals so sandwiches can be convenient. My lunch of croque monsieur already vanished and I was already hungry. It seems that we have planned a nice place in mind for dinner. We were warned that this place will not be cheap, so it will probably be sandwiches for us for the remainder of the trip.
We took a convoluted way of going to the restaurant, getting lost along the way because we didn’t know how to use the metro versus the railway line. We managed to arrive at the correct station which was nearest the restaurant. But now that I am looking at the map of where the restaurant it. It is actually within walking distance of Eiffel Tower. It would have been better had we just walked. I guess maps can really be a challenge to some people even if they don’t admit it. Anyway, the point is we were able to get to the restaurant. There was also no queue there and we were able to get seats immediately. The restaurant was quite fancy but not overly fancy that it would look extremely expensive. The interiors were very cozy and it would probably serve well as a date restaurant.
I’m not an expert when it comes to French food and I would be forgiven if I thought French fries were really French. I went for one of the few authentic French food that I really knew and it was duck confit. I’ve had duck confit in the past and I didn’t really think too much about it but this is the original one. Could it be much better. I have an open mind when it comes to food and I would like to try a lot of new stuff. I remember it was supposed to be a crispy leg of duck but this looked something very different. My duck confit appeared to be more like steak.
There is more than meets the eye though as confit is supposed to take a very long time to prepare to make it tasty, it is soaked in fat and slow cooked. I suppose the same thing happened to my steak-looking confit. Mine turned out to be not too bad. Maybe someone like me can’t appreciate the effort it takes to make something like that but I was trying to savor each bite. It won’t be fair to the confit if I just wolfed it all down. My friend had a horrible time with her confit as it was a bit too rare. There was still blood oozing from the meat of the duck. For some reason, she didn’t have it cooked a little bit more. Maybe she was just trying to be polite to the chef. My duck although a bit bloody as well, it wasn’t as bad as hers. I think this was intentional to keep the meat juicy.
She got her relief in the form of dessert. My meal was interesting but I still have to get used to this kind of food. I am aware that French food is considered to be one of the best in the world and I want to try some of that. This place was supposed to be one of the better ones to try but I think it would take some time for my palate to get used to this. The staff were very helpful in explaining stuff to us. I expect that a lot of tourists manage to find their way here. Still their service was good. I would love to give this place another try when I find myself in Paris but I think their prices are a bit high for me. Maybe in my next date.
