If you keep walking down the covered walkway, you would encounter what is probably one of the most ordinary houses here in Park Güell. The structures built at Park Güell are the product of Gaudí’s genius in design. Unconventional they may be but they too have that uniqueness about that them make them special. From the houses in the park to the walkways, each one of them have that touch of Gaudí that made it qualify to be a UNESCO World Heritage site. Which is why, when you come across this house, you would be surprised to see how conventional it was. This turns out to be Gaudí’s house. I was genuinely surprised to see this place. The story behind this house is that when Park Güell was being marketed as a residential area, it didn’t really do very well despite the count, who owns this place, moving in to the estate. In the end, he managed to convince Gaudí, who designed the park, to get a property here.
Apparently, he needed to pay for the place considering he already designed it. Anyway, I was expecting the house designed by Gaudí himself to be out of this world much like Casa Batlló in downtown Barcelona is. It turned out to be the opposite. It was a rather uninteresting house. Perhaps my standards for houses have been altered by seeing Gaudí’s works. You need to pay a small fee to enter the house. It is a rather conventional one, except that you would see some furniture which were designed by Gaudí. You can see the rooms where he lived in. Including his bed room which was surprisingly simple. There is also a prayer room which he used quite often especially in the latter part of his life. I think it is still worth visiting this house if only to see how one of the most brilliant designers of our time lived.
