I wasn’t entirely convinced that I liked the design of the Sagrada Familia. You can probably call me conventional but I always have typical images of churches in my mind. Gothic, Romanesque or Baroque, these are fairly conventional designs which I have come to associate with European churches. The design of the Sagrada Familia truly turns church design on its head. This is unlike any other church that I have visited. Sure the more modern churches are okay, but this one is already more than a hundred years old and it is still under construction. Antoni Gaudí is really a very creative designer as we was able to come up with something very original.

The outside of the church is very much still under construction. There are still several spires which have yet to be built, including the central one, which you might expect to be the tallest one. However, you would be surprised to know that the interior of the church is already complete. Following the Gothic style, the roof of the Sagrada Familia is held up by very tall columns. The columns here are supposed to analogous to trees and branches holding the sky up. But what trees these were. One of the pioneering designs of Gaudí is the use of geometric shapes such as cones and maybe taking a cross section of them any making them part of the design. These cross sections would produce interesting shapes. He would also take these geometric shapes and combine them with other to produce other interesting shapes. I really liked how it all came out and it is hard to believe that this was designed more than a hundred years ago.
