The Sagrada Familia Church in Barcelona is probably one of the most well known landmarks of this Catalonian city. I have long seen photos of this still unfinished church and I was impressed with the uniqueness of the design. I remember seeing the church and thinking how can that be a church. This work of Antoni Gaudí is certainly one of his most defining works. It is considered to be one of the longest running construction projects in the world. Construction of this church was started in 1882. It would be interesting to note that Gaudí did not start off with the project and was only brought in the following year.

Knowing Gaudí, he won’t stand for someone else’s design. He took over the design and incorporated his signature style. When you look at the design, it is really way ahead of its time. Even now, you would struggle to find anything like it. Now that it has passed a hundred years of construction, it is still going strong and perhaps gathering momentum. Gaudí is known to be a very devout Catholic and he has incorporated a lot of scenes from the Bible into the church itself. For example, there is a Passion Facade of the church, which is where people would normally enter from. As you might expect, the Passion Facade features scenes from the passion and death of Jesus Christ. With a church like this, you really need to pay attention to the details since there is a lot to see here despite it not being completed yet.
