Inside the Roman Amphitheater at Tarraco

Going Down to the Amphitheater

Going Down to the Amphitheater

I was impressed by the ruins of the Roman Amphitheater which we encountered by chance here at Tarragona, called Tarraco back then. This is part of the Archeological Ensemble of Tarraco which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Roman amphitheater is one of many sites which are part of the listing, I’m hoping we would be able to visit most of them. The Roman amphitheater is remarkably well preserved. It was built during the Roman times when Tarraco was the capital of the Roman province where Spain is now. As you can expect, Tarraco was a very important place which is why there are a lot of these kinds of buildings here in the city.

Gladiator Anyone?

Gladiator Anyone?

The amphitheater as you might expect is where performances are held. Roman society was very complex and they had structures like these to hold performances. Although the amphitheater is not very large when compared to modern day arenas. It is still an engineering marvel since it was built probably two thousand years ago. Large parts of the amphitheater are still usable although it is more for tourism that for performances. I don’t see a lot of effort going to restoring it to it original state since much of it is still intact.
