One of the most visited places here in Montserrat is the Basilica of Santa Maria de Montserrat. As you might expect in a monastery complex, there is also a large church here, in fact, it is a basilica. You go through one of the arches at the square of the monastery complex. It actually isn’t very obvious that there is a basilica here since the buildings here tend to be blocky and un-churchlike. Upon entry into the buildings, you are led into another opening which is where the main basilica entrance is.
Considering how large the basilica is, this opening wasn’t very large. It is flanked by two buildings each one no higher the that basilica facade. The area is enclosed enough that not much light get in through here except when it is directly above. Perhaps it is also done to protect against and cold winds coming from outside. To the right of the basilica entrance is arguably one of the main events here in Montserrat. There is a long queue and I can only guess as to what the purpose of the queue is. The queue stretches all the way to the outside so I guess it should be quite important. Whatever it is, it better be worth it.
