One of the most important landmarks here at Montserrat is the monastery for which it is famous for. From the external plaza where the hotels and restaurants are, you go through one of the entrances where it opens up to another square within the monastery complex itself. The monastery is beautifully located below some peaks of the mountains here. I immediately thought that it was a very good decision to choose this place as the location of the monastery. The beauty of the mountains here is just stunning. The monastery here is on an elevated platform giving it the appearance of grandeur. Off to the right is a basilica where everyone is going to. There is a long line outside the basilica and people are queuing, we are curious to see what it is.
We had to stop for the obligatory photos here since it was really that beautiful. The basilica apparently is already visible from the outside and I didn’t even realize that it was a church. The construction of the monastery here is rather blocky and it would appear more like a fort rather than a monastery. Looking at what has been built here, it would be hard to imagine how they managed to build the monastery in the first place. The mountain is so high up, people must has lived here for years just to complete the complex.
