The Plaça de Sant Jaume or Saint James’ Square seems to be one of the more important places here in the Gothic quarter of Barcelona. Here you have not one but two important government buildings. The buildings here are building in the Gothic style. One of the buildings here is the Casa de la Ciutat which turned out to be city hall. The one opposite the city hall seems to be just as important as it is called the Palau de la Generalitat or the Palace of the Generalitat of Catalonia. It is described to the seat of the Presidency of Catalonia. The Casa de la Ciutat is just for Barcelona, while this one is on a whole new level as it is on the level of Catalonia. I’m not sure how to describe Catalonia but documents describe it as a community and not a state. Much blood has been shed over this so I will stop here.

The Palau de la Generalitat is another imposing building on this small square. It is described to be one of the oldest buildings still in use by the same group which built it, in this case, the government of Catalonia. This is interesting considering the numerous upheavals this area has gone through over the years. Like the Casa de la Ciutat, I didn’t go in here either. There was a guard stationed outside the building and it was like he was discouraging visitors from approaching. It seemed to be possible to go in, but you probably would need tickets somewhere. Either way, it was a weekend, and the government offices might not be open. I was also saving my euros for the more important sites.
