With our bellies full, it was finally time for us to start exploring the beautiful city of Barcelona. Although I was aware of a place called Barcelona, Spain, I didn’t really know much about it until 1992 when the Olympics were held in this city. Even then, I still didn’t know much about it, who knew that 22 years later, I would be able to come an visit this beautiful city. Barcelona is the capital of the autonomous community of Catalonia. Catalonia itself has been in the news as there have been movements to establish Catalonia as an independent state. Time will tell what will become of these movements.
Already, you can tell how different Catalonia is from Madrid where I just came from. The signs in Barcelona where incomprehensible to me, until I notice that there was an equivalent one which I can understand. It was a translation, apparently the sign wasn’t in Spanish, but rather in the native Catalan. This is my first time to encounter Catalan and I didn’t know that it would be that different from Spanish, it was almost French, which I guess it understandable since Catalonia has a border with France. It was actually fun trying to read the signs here and try to figure out what they mean. When in the metro though, it was much easier since it was just a matter to connecting the dots. Most metro systems operate in more or less the same way. We were on our way to UNESCO World Heritage site Sagrada Familia which one of the most well known landmarks of Barcelona, I hope we would have time to go in.
