The Alcazar de Segovia isn’t the first European castle I have been to. It isn’t even the largest I have visited. But somehow, the Alcazar de Segovia can be described as charming. The design of the castle is a mixture of different architectural styles incorporating European and Middle Eastern design. The castle itself has fairy tail towers which became the inspiration for theme park castles in Disneyland, and not surprisingly, it has also become my stereotype for a European castle. The castle itself is actually quite small despite its importance as a UNESCO World Heritage site and one can probably go through the castle in an hour if they really want. However, the won’t be giving the castle justice.
The inside of the castle is surprisingly magnificent as I was expecting it to be dark given the lack of extraordinary design in the exterior of the castle. The rooms of the castle were designed by Arab artisans and they imparted their genius in creating some of the most impressive rooms I have ever seen. However, the design seems to be primarily limited to the ceiling where your eyes will undoubtedly be drawn to. Paths leading to viewpoint within the castle are a good plus as you can see the surrounding area of Segovia as well as the Old Town of Segovia against the snow capped Sierra Guadarrama.
