I passed by a number of churches here in the Old Town of Segovia, which already has a large cathedral. I don’t quite understand the need for more churches given that the size of the town isn’t really that big. Anyway, that is more architecture to see for us. Like any other major town in medieval Spain, the town of Segovia also has its own alcazar or castle. This is normally a fort where the head of the town lives. The head, as you might imagine, lives much like a king and can be considered as such.
The alcazar is usually located at a strategic point of the city, preferably one that is elevated where you can see the rest of the area. The alcazar of Segovia is located in such a location where it can see not just nice views but also any approaching invaders. The alcazar is located at the end of town. It is worthwhile to note that this was the same area where the original cathedral of Segovia was built until it was destroyed in a rebellion. For both the alcazar and the old cathedral to be built in this area, it must be quite a location. I’m heading there now, hopefully it would be worth a visit.
