As you can see from the outside, the Cathedral of Segovia is a very large building. It is certainly one the largest in the Old Town of Segovia. It is actually the second cathedral to be built in the old town as the first one was razed to the ground by their “protectors”. Lessons learned, the replacement cathedral was place around the Plaza Mayor and it is one of the most prominent buildings here in the square. The cathedral itself is cavernous. It wasn’t very bright inside but the light the does going in the cathedral passed through the cathedral’s numerous stained glass windows.
If I don’t have an audio guide with me which would direct me to different places of interest, I would just go around the numerous chapels which surround the interior of the cathedral. Each little chapel has its own design and normally a snapshot of the prevailing art of that time. It is often possible to deduce when certain parts of the church were built just by looking at the design of the said parts. I am not expert on architecture but I’m sure anyone with the knowledge of specific styles of architecture will be able to guess these. There is also a touch of modernity in each of the chapels since the lights would automatically turn on or off depending on whether any one was there in the chapel. Motion sensors were installed to conserve power used by the cathedral and also serves as security device in case someone tries something funny.
