The Aqueduct of Segovia is truly a magnificent sight to behold. The massive structure is an old Roman aqueduct bridge. It is clearly the centerpiece of the Old Town of Segovia, which is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage site list. The structure was used to ferry water from the nearby Fuente Fria River. The aqueduct isn’t really that tall everywhere. In fact, the tallest part of the aqueduct is at the town center. The town center is one of the lower parts of the area and thus to keep the water flow constant, the aqueduct is taller in this part of town. It is possible to walk the length of the aqueduct. It doesn’t carry water anymore but it did until very recently.

Going Towards the Source of the Aqueduct of the Old Town of Segovia

The aqueduct starts at the outskirts of the Old Town of Segovia. From the old town’s center, you need to walk uphill to get to the end of the aqueduct. The legs of the aqueduct grow shorter and short to keep the top of the aqueduct almost perfectly level. The aqueduct is at a very, very gentle angle that you probably won’t notice it at all. This was done so that gravity will help bring the water down the aqueduct. When you think about it, it is an incredibly difficult engineering feat today. What more when it was done almost two thousand years ago. The builders need to be aware of the height of the are which the water was passing through and build a beautiful aqueduct out of it. Now, that I think about it, it is even more impressive that this was all done with the use of any mortar to hold everything together. It is held in place by gravity due to the sheer weight of the stones used to construct it.
