Beautiful Altar at the Cathedral of Toledo

The altar in a church is the centerpiece of the structure. This where most of the services are held with the priest celebrating the Holy Mass in front of the people. As in an altar in the traditional sense, this is where the Body and Blood of Christ in the form of bread and wine are offered. Based on what I have seen from the Cathedral of Toledo, the altar is expected to be the most beautiful part of the church. As you can see it is really very impressive. The altar area is fenced off by a large metal gate. You can see through the gate though, but it is quite strange to see a gate separating the altar from the rest of the church.

Can You Recognize the Scenes?

Can You Recognize the Scenes?

I believe it was because the traditional design of the church that the gate exists. These days, the congregation are supposed to be part of the celebration and not separated from it. I did not get to see a mass celebrated here although I would have wanted to see one. It would have been interesting to see how the gate works these days. The altar is incredibly intricate with numerous panels showing scenes from the life of Christ. The ceiling is designed in Mudéjar style. With the signature brick design in full display. Personally, I would have like a more Gothic approach as this with go with the overall design of the altar. The bricks give it a different kind of feel.
