Art at the Sacristy of the Cathedral of Toledo

Sacristy of the Cathedral of Toledo

It seems that the sacristy of the Cathedral of Toledo has been turned into a small art gallery. The works of art here seem to be quite important. I’m not an art critic nor do I know much about the art on display here. In fact, I would only identify a handful of paintings if they were shown to me. It seems this trip would allow me to get more familiar with these more famous works of art. I had no idea that I would be exposed to world famous art at least for this visit to Toledo. I was under the impression that the Historic City of Toledo was known more for its architecture. It seems there was more to Toledo than that.

The Sacristy of the Cathedral of Toledo has some works of art from famous “local” painter El Greco. I’m sure visitors will hear a lot about El Greco in a visit to Toledo. I was mesmerized by the grandeur of the Disrobing of Christ Painting that seems to be the focus of the gallery. Not to be missed is the amazing fresco that was painted on the ceiling of the sacristy. The image something like the view of a person when he is looking straight into heaven. The angels and saints were painted with from the point of view of someone who is below them. It was amusing to see such art, as I would know later, this would be a very common theme I would see elsewhere. It is truly amazing to see this work of art and it is also easy to lose the fact that making something like this is incredibly hard.
