Monuments at Retiro Park

If one thing would give character to Retiro Park, it would have to be their monuments. There were numerous statues of various personalities here in Retiro Park. Most of them as you might expect, have a lot to do with Spanish history, most of which I don’t really have any familiarity with. If I had time, I would probably try to look up some of these personalities and see what their contribution to Spanish society was to deserve such a monument. One which left an impression on me was the rather prominent one the Retiro Pond, which was dedicated to the King Alfonso XII. You can probably argue that that is the most important statue in the entire park if only for its location.

Some of the statues here would be hidden in a rather isolated part of the park, while others will be more prominent like in the center of small plazas on top of a beautiful fountain. I guess, that is what makes these parks acquire that European charm. There were names carved on the sides of the statues for the curious. However, I wished that they would put those signs, telling the uninformed about the story behind the statues that lay before them. I would have loved to go around the park since it was really a very beautiful day, however, I needed to make my way back to the train station soon. I believe I will be back in Madrid soon and I will properly explore the city then.
