Going through the exhibits in the National Museum of Ireland is nothing short of a quick tour of the entire history or Ireland. This focuses more on the ancient history rather than the more recent ones. It did give me a lot of information which I didn’t know before. For instance, that Ireland was once occupied by Vikings. If you come from where I come from, you would probably not be aware of a lot of details of European history. I always thought that Vikings were only limited to the Scandinavian countries and possibly Iceland and Greenland. However, it seems that they were more widespread than I thought.
The Vikings were probably the first major people who settled in the island of Ireland, and true enough, the current capital of Dublin was a former Viking settlement. I gained a whole new perspective on Viking life and that they didn’t just live on boats and wear helmets with horns. The National Museum of Ireland had a whole section of the museum dedicated to Viking Ireland. There were a lot of artifacts found from this era including swords and weapons. There was even an interesting model of a Viking settlement. It was a pity they don’t have those these days. Perhaps that is a good idea for a theme park.
