It won’t be a while until we were to enter the Newgrange Stone Age Passage Tomb. The number of visitors which can be in the tomb at one time is limited which is why we were made to wait outside the tomb until it was our turn. It was a lovely day that day and I was lucky to be able to get blue skies here at Newgrange. I was going around the tomb hoping to see something interesting. I noticed that although there were a lot of stones from 5,000 years ago, there were some features of the passage tomb which seem to be downright modern.
What I noticed what the presence of a very flat platform behind the passage tomb. It was as if it was manufactured to help hold up the stones which were piled on top of them. I don’t think there was any way that this could have been an original feature. I didn’t have anyone to ask but I think that is pretty much a given. When Newgrange was excavated, it was first thought to be just a cave, until the rest of the tomb was excavated. There was much vandalism which happened then, including carving names in the tomb and removal of the corpses. It was quite sad, but effort was made to restore the monument to how it was but I think a lot was left to the creativity and imagination of the restorers.
