I was quite surprised to know that visitors can just walk in Trinity College. I would have thought that an academic institution such as this would require more stringent security than that. Surprisingly, when I walked in, the place wasn’t flooded with tourists. The grounds of Trinity College were large enough to handle a large number of tourists, but it probably helped that students were on vacation for Christmas. This was well and good so I would be able to explore Trinity College with less stress.
At the middle of the open area is a rather prominent landmark. This is the Campanille of Trinity College. Essentially a bell tower but I have never seen one without an accompanying church. It is one of the most famous landmarks of Trinity College and with good reason. It is actually quite elegant and you need to come closer to better appreciate it. For a bell tower it is rather small but I guess it serves its purpose. I believe the bell still tolls, but I didn’t hear it when I visited. There is an interesting superstition that any student who passes through the bell tower while it tolls will fail their exams, better safe than sorry.
