To be honest, Annagh House wasn’t really my first choice, I was hoping to be able to get a room in the Ballsbridge area in Dublin, but I was told that there was no room at the inn. The owner did recommend a few alternative together with some other suggestions further down south of Dublin. Unfortunately, those alternatives were either not available or beyond my budget. More importantly, she gave me a website www.bnb-network.com where I can search and make reservations on a bed and breakfast of my choice. That is how I found Annagh House. Annagh House wasn’t exactly the cheapest place here but the biggest selling factor for me what how beautifully made the house was. My house isn’t anything like that and at least for a couple of nights, I would be able to sleep in a house as beautiful as this one.
John of Annagh House greeted me at the door, was seems to be an elderly yet healthy man who probably spends his time managing the bed and breakfast. Despite his stern looks, he was actually quite friendly and chatted me up. I guess this is a requirement if you operate a bed and breakfast. As it was already night, I excused myself and head into the bedroom. Surprisingly, I was given a two bed room instead of the single bed room I was expecting. I have no need for the extra bed but it was there anyway. Immediately noticed how hot the bedroom was. Outside the temperature was almost freezing but inside was really hot. This was a welcome change from the cold house I live in back in county Donegal. Probably because I was too cheap to turn on the heating. Maybe if I have an extra room I would have my own bed and breakfast.
The bedroom was just like in the photos. It was well made up and there was even a small television even if I don’t need it. There was an en suite bathroom with shower. Interestingly, the bedroom also has a fireplace, I have never seen a house like this. I asked John about this and he said that this was an old house built in the early 1900s. Back then they didn’t have any heating and had to rely on fireplaces, thus every room had a fireplace. It even has a button to summon the servants to add more firewood. These days the fireplace is just decorative, with modern conveniences like gas fired heating it is so much more easy to warm up. John commented that house weren’t built like this anymore. Probably referring to the quality of the house. There were other rooms in the house open to visitors, I was told that he also had guests from France staying with him for a week or so. It seems they were regular guests to him since they need to visit their daughter who lives nearby. I was very glad with my choice to stay in Annagh House and it was a good as it looked.
