Adam and Eve’s Church

Inside the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Dublin

Inside the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Dublin

The city center of Dublin seems to have a lot of churches than I can visit. I was surprised how many there are here it was like doing a church visitation during Holy Week. Come to think of it, it should be fairly easy to do something like that here since the churches are all so close together. Anyway, I was very disappointed with the weather here in Dublin, which was typical Irish weather, cold and wet. The wet part irritates me the most since I won’t be able to freely go around taking photos. By now, the rain had subsided a bit but it was still quite wet, I still continued on my tour of Dublin and ran into another church, one which had a more unusual name – Adam and Eve Church.

This was probably the first time I had heard of a church which was named after Adam and Eve. I usually hear of churches being named after saints, the Virgin Mary or Jesus himself. I don’t think Adam and Eve were ever considered as saints, though people seems to know these names quite well. When I got to the church, there was a sign which said that it was the Church of the Immaculate Conception. This apparently was the real name and Adam and Eve Church was just a name given to the church because the Franciscans secretly celebrated mass at the nearby Adam and Eve tavern when it was still not legal for Catholics to practice their faith back then. After the Catholic emancipation, a church was built near the tavern and initially dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi. The church was later dedicated to Our of Lady of the Immaculate Conception. Inside the church was quite typical, though one color stands out here – blue, which is the color of our Lady. It was quite a refreshing change from the noise outside to the serenity inside.
