Inside John’s Lane Church

I was very impressed by the exteriors of the Church of Saint Augustine and Saint John the Baptist here in Dublin. The exterior of the church was a far cry from the traditional but rather drab look of the gray stone churches. The brown highlights in the arches and the bright green roof served to distinguish it from the other stone churches of Dublin. Add to that the magnificent tower which happens to be Dublin’s tallest building. I was fortunate that the church was open for visitors. I would think that a lot of non-Catholics would also be attracted to the beautiful church here. The interiors of the church were grand, as expected. This is where the similarities to the other churches come back.

I have been to other large Catholic churches here in Ireland, such as the one in Letterkenny and the one in Derry and they seem to look alike externally. This is also true for the inside of the churches. In this regard, John’s LAne Church seems to follow the template of these large churches. They do have the requisite stained glass windows, beautiful statues as well a grand altar in the middle. I was very impressed with how this place is still maintain, this would probably count as one of the most beautiful churches I have been to in Ireland. Interestingly, there weren’t a lot of tourists here either. I would wholeheartedly recommend people to visit this church, it is really a work of art.
