It would appear that I won’t be able to enjoy Fort Dunree as much as I want to. The rain here can’t seem to stop and it would probably continue all the way through the night. The other group in the cafe has already left and we were still thinking of what to do. In the end I decided to head out and start taking photographs. It won’t be nice but I don’t think I have much choice here. Fort Dunree is a rather remote fort, the fort was built back during the British times to defend against a possible French invasion from this side of Ireland. I don’t think it ever happened but I think it says a lot about the strategic importance of the location.
Over the years, the fort was upgraded with the building we see today. The fort also figured in World War I while guarding troops who were stationed nearby. It has massive guns mounted on the nearby slopes and it probably served well since the area has an excellent view of the waters around it. Irish forces took over Fort Dunree just before World War II. Now, it is a military museum showcasing various weapons and stuff from the wars. I wasn’t interested in war stories so I didn’t bother going in the museum. I was even more discouraged from going in by the entrance fee into the museum.
