Saint Patrick’s Church in Donegal Town

When we were on our way to Donegal Castle, we happened to pass by a rather unique structure. It was a church but the design of the church was something I haven’t seen here yet. Most of the Catholic churches here in Ireland tend to have a Gothic design, this one was quite different. When we were heading back out of Donegal Town, we managed to stop near the church to get some photos taken. The church here is a Catholic church dedicated to Saint Patrick’s, Ireland’s patron saint. The church is built on a small elevation making it a bit taller than it is really it. From the river we could easily see the distinctive bell tower.

Probably the most striking feature of Saint Patrick’s church is the bell tower itself. This one was round, and it contrasts with the sharp angles used in the the rest of the church. It would seem that the church is quite old with its stone exterior but we were surprised to know that it was built quite recently, 1930. There was no activity in the church at that time, the doors were closed as well so we weren’t able to go in. We quickly head back to the car to continue our exploration.
