I really think that Donegal town is a prettier town than Letterkenny. When I first came here I was very much amused by the small towns which are on the way to Letterkenny. Most of them oozed that small town vibe, which unfortunately, can’t be felt in Letterkenny. However, in our visit to Donegal Town, I was delighted to see that Donegal has this vibe as well. Donegal town has a small square where people can sit and relax. This seems to be right smack in the center of town and naturally, there were more people here. The square here is surrounded by numerous establishments like hotels and restaurants and it is probably one of the most important places in the town.
The park here is marked by an obelisk which which is called the Diamond Obelisk. Back when the English were coming to Donegal, some local friars feared the loss of their local culture, undertook the massive task of writing down their history starting from their mythology to their present day. This turned out to be one of the most important sources of Irish history. The Diamond Obelisk here it meant to commemorate that feat. Only the tourists here seem to be paying attention to the obelisk. Most of the people just mind their own business.
