From the outside it would look like Donegal Castle had five floors, however it would seem that I was mistaken. When we climbed up the top floor, I was surprised to see it had two levels for windows, right where another floor should have been. I do not know if there should have been another one but there isn’t one now. I was kind of expecting that there would be a bedroom to see how the Gaelic chieftains lived but there wasn’t any. Instead, it have been converted into an exhibition area.
The exhibit area of the top floor wasn’t particularly impressive. There were probably six kiosks where you can read more about the history of Donegal and Donegal castle. This one in particular, focused on the O’Donnell’s who were prominent in this land. There were also scale models of Donegal castle throughout the years. You can see that there used to be a wall which goes beyond the walls of the castle but it is no longer there. However, much of the castle is as it looks like today. By visiting this place, I came to know a little bit more about the history of Ireland, this period of Gaelic Ireland seems quite interesting, maybe I would be able to visit more places which tells this story.
