The ground floor of Donegal Castle was so dark that it was sometimes difficult to make out what stuff was inside. I guess coming from outside, your eyes need some time to adjust to the darkness however, because of this, we didn’t really linger too much at the ground floor. The castle has five stories but I do not know if it was all accessible to visitors. There was a stairwell to the right of the ground floor.
The stairwell was actually quite interesting since it would appear the it was carved from solid rock. I am not sure how they made this or was it subsequently cemented together for greater safety for visitors. This seemed to be the only way up for visitors so we just followed everyone else up the stairs. It looked promising since the stairwell looked much brighter than the rest of the ground floor.
