Donegal Castle was and probably still is the heart of Donegal Town. Back in 1471, the clan O’Donnell built this castle and it still stands. It is considered one of the best examples of Gaelic Castles in Ireland. Donegal Castle is built on the banks of the river Eske which flows behind it. The castle is an elegant five story building where you can go in and explore. The ground floor of the castle seems to be the work area of the castle. This probably where food is prepared. I also assume that firearms and ammunition is kept here as well.
This was the official residence of the O’Donnells when it was built. Not surprisingly, it also had some what I would consider more modern convenience, a toilet. As we were walking up the stairs to the first floor, we chanced upon this rather interesting room. It was a small room big enough to fit on person. It had an elevated portion with a hole in the middle. It seems it is a toilet. Residents would use this and waste will fall down to be collected afterwards. For some reason, it didn’t seem to have a door, possibly because it was because it was opened for tourism purposes. It is interesting to see unexpected thing like this, at least it provides us a better glimpse of how life was back then.
