Ground Floor of Donegal Castle

The county town of Donegal is built with Donegal Castle as its heart. You can consider Donegal Castle to be the main reason for Donegal Town’s existence. Donegal Castle came into being when the one of the prominent clans back then, the O’Donnells. Hugh O’Donnell, the chief of the O’Donnell’s, built what became Donegal Castle in 1474 and effectively founded the town of Donegal with this single act. Donegal Castle naturally served as the residence of office of the O’Donnells. You can see how a Gaelic Castle is like. The main building is the five story building to the right.

Upon entering the building, you will immediately notice how dark it is, this is the ground floor of the Donegal Castle. There is very little light here with tiny windows serving as their lights. This is more like a storage area for food and ammunition. It would seem that a lot of work is done here but with the little light available, it might be a little difficult to get much done. I won’t be surprised if people just took their work outside where it is much brighter. Now there is electricity here because of tourism. Maybe they used torches before, it would be nice to keep warm using those as well.
