Instead of another nature trip in county Donegal, we have opted for a bit more history this time around. Ireland has hundreds of years of history and a lot of it is preserved in its vast countryside. It would be surprising to know that some of these historical structures can be found in the modern cities and towns. Then again, maybe not. After all, these towns were usually founded centuries back and it serves as the foundation of the modern towns we see today. In county Donegal, the county town of Donegal is our focus for historical enlightenment. It is about an hour’s ride from Letterkenny across beautiful scenery to the south of the county.
Donegal Castle is one of the main points of interest in Donegal town. You might say that the castle itself serves as the center of the town. After getting to the town center we immediately spotted the castle, it wasn’t particularly big considering it is a castle, but maybe it has a lot to see here. We parked at a parking lot behind the castle near the river and walked to the castle. There wasn’t much to see from the outside as most of the place was blocked the main entrance. No free viewing I guess. There was a small fee to enter the castle, I hope this was worth it.
