Having been to these types of places here in county Donegal, I have already known what to expect when exploring the rugged countryside of which county Donegal is famous for. Melmore Head is yet another of these places where are similar to countless places in Donegal. Of course, it can’t be that identical. Each of these places have their own unique points and I guess the unique point of Melmore Head is the beach here and the presence of a nearby hill. If the tide is low, people can go down to the beach and have a nice stroll, however, this was not the case for us so we had to content ourselves to looking at the beach from atop some rugged rocks near the beach. Perhaps another time will allow us to go to the beach.
What I like about these places is that there always seems to be a lot of hiking opportunities, or as they call it, hillwalking. The first requirement naturally is a hill, it just so happened that there is a hill nearby for us to climb. There is a natural path to the right of the beach and we just needed to follow that. parts of the land were fenced off and I wasn’t really sure if were allowed inside. It was explained to me that it was okay to go in and that the fence was more for animals such a sheep rather than humans. This was to keep the sheep from straying. I wasn’t expecting to be climbing a hill but it seems we are. It doesn’t seem to be difficult anyway.
