From the walls of old city of Derry, you can see the rest of the city. One of the structures here stands out quite literally from the rest. There is a large and tall church in the distance and it seems to be a interesting structure. I thought I would visit the church since I was already making my way to Free Derry. I had to go through several apartment blocks before I could reach the cathedral. It wasn’t really very difficult to miss since the bell tower is very tall. The church is located in what seems to be a decent part of town though I wouldn’t really say it is at the center of town.
Saint Eugene’s Cathedral is quite young considered that Ireland is a staunchly Catholic nation. But since Ireland, particularly, Northern Ireland was held by the British who were Anglican, Catholicism was not met with favor. There were laws passed which forbid Catholics and thus Irish from joining government. However, when that law was repealed, this also paved the way for the establishment of a Catholic Cathedral in Derry. Saint Eugene’s Cathedral was built over the course of several decades through the generous funding of Irish and Irish in the United States where the Irish diaspora spread. However, due to funding issues, the Cathedral wasn’t completed until the early 1903.
