Even before I came to Ireland, I was already aware of the raw natural beauty of Donegal. It is the county on the northwestern side of the island and its fame for its natural beauty is known throughout the country. Granted that Ireland is already such a beautiful place, how much more the most beautiful part? Ireland, for its ruggedness, surprisingly doesn’t have a lot of tall mountains. Although much of the land is very hilly, mountains are a bit of a rarity. I normally enjoy visiting mountains but climbing them is normally a hit or miss for me. I would usually just take the easy way up, either by vehicle or by cable car. Don’t get me wrong, I love visiting these kinds of places but my legs can’t last very long hikes.
My friend suddenly got into the hobby of hiking. It would be a waste if these beautiful hills were not explored and Ireland has lots of them. Since Ireland has a dearth of mountains, hikes here are called hillwalks. Which brings me to my next activity. I was one weekend asked to bring my camera and sturdy shoes as we were going somewhere. Little did I know that I would be dragged hillwalking that day. I have been insisting that I am not ready for that yet since I still need to buy the proper equipment for the hillwalks, but here I was. We were on our way to a remote but well known part of county Donegal. I just hope my shoes would be able to take the punishment.
