Around Saint Columb’s Cathedral

A Look at Saint Columb’s Cathedral in Derry-Londonderry

The Cathedral of Saint Columb here in Derry-Londonderry is certainly nice. Contrary to my expectations, this is actually an Anglican church and it happens to be the first Protestant cathedral built in Europe. I’m not sure why the name of the saint seems to change Saint Columba is his name in Letterykenny but the church here is named after Saint Columb, and I believe he is one and the same person. I theorize that this might be due to the Catholic and Protestant differences. Pretty strange when he is the same person. I actually went in the Cathedral and it reminded me a lot of the one in Letterkenny. There was no service going on and I wanted to try to take photos inside the church.

That’s when I noticed that there was a rather prominent sign which says photographs allowed only with coupon. Apparently, you need to purchase a two euro coupon from the guy in front to take photos. At that point I decided that the church wasn’t so nice after all. I understand that the church also needs to earn money for maintenance costs but that was something I didn’t want to do at that point in time. The rest of the cathedral is surrounded by grave sites. I supposed these were either the priests of the cathedral or prominent people of Derry at that time. I didn’t recognize any of the names there so I can only surmise that they were locals. After going one round of the cathedral, it was back to the wall we go.
