My friend has always talked about how they would go shopping in the nearby city of Derry-Londonderry. It is said that stuff here is much cheaper as well as the exchange rate makes it better to shop there instead of Ireland. It is just thirty minutes away from Letterkenny so it is actually a worthwhile trip especially if you need to buy a lot. I had no idea of Derry-Londonderry until now. It seems it figured prominently in the struggle between Ireland and Britain. From what I gather, Derry-Londonderry was one of the strongholds of the British when it controlled much of the island. This brings us to one of the most significant features of the city – the city walls.
In those times, it is not surprising to see walled cities especially if the surrounding area is not very friendly to you. Apparently the walls of Derry-Londonderry worked to a certain extent. Now, it is one of the primary attractions of the city of Derry-Londonderry. As you might expect, the walls surround the town, while some parts have already disappeared, there is still some left to explore. I do not know how much of the walls are still the original ones but it is there for the exploration. You can walk on top of the walls of the city and around the perimeter of the old town. You can see that the town has already grown beyond its original size. Thankfully there is no more need for these kinds of walls.
