When I was first going around Letterkenny, I was surprised to see two churches next to each other. I was under the impression that Ireland was a largely Catholic country which got me the idea that both of these churches were Catholic. I was mistaken. The much smaller church is a Church of Ireland church. From my understanding, the Church of Ireland is an offshoot of the Church of England also known as Anglican Church. Because of the political differences of the two countries, the churches were likewise split. Now it is the second largest religious denomination after the Roman Catholic church. It is a bit strange to find out that it still has features of both Catholic and the Protestant churches.
Conwal Parish Church is a tiny church when compared to the massive Cathedral of Saint Eunan and Saint Columba just outside its doorstep. It is significantly older having existed at least since the 17th century. Despite being a church of such history, it doesn’t seem to be that grand, probably owing to its Protestant leanings. There is no “main door” where you can have grand weddings and all that but it is more to the side, near where the cemetery is. The grounds are so small that it is difficult to get proper photos of the church. Most photos you will take of this church will have to be done outside its grounds.
