I have been several times to the southern boom town of Shenzhen in Guangdong province. Back then, Shenzhen was considered as a Hong Kong wannabe where people just go there for cheap knock offs. Coming here used to be a traumatic experience for me since I wasn’t used to this kind of environment. Think of a train station in rural China, it was very stressful to see so many people and potentially a lot of thieves as well since train stations are a well known haunt of thieves. Travelling within the city was not easy either, but how times have changed.

Shenzhen is now one of, if not, the most progressive city in the entire country. The cost of living here in the city is one of the highest in the country. Not surprising, a lot of people try to find work here as well. There used to be a time when all the people of Shenzhen were practically from a different place in China, that is, no native Shenzhen people. But people have since taken root in this modern city and have produced native Shenzhen people. As a result of its multicultural heritage, Shenzhen plays hosts to a myriad of Chinese ethnicities, this is most evident in their food.

This is where I had my first exposure to cuisine from China other than Cantonese and Hokkien food. I had no idea how wonderful these food were! I was instantly enamored with Sichuan and Hunan food. Knowing this, it is not surprising that my friends brought me to a Sichuan restaurant. Unfortunately, this seems to have been a reluctant choice as one of the guys can’t take a lot of spice. Worst of all, he was the one who ordered the food, so a lot of stuff didn’t turn out to be spicy. The whole point of going to a Sichuan restaurant is their spice. A look at the food and you would know what I mean. I believe only one of them can be considered a Sichuan dish. However, all of them were excellent choices. They just weren’t spicy. It also seems to be a higher end restaurant, one of their bosses would bring them every now and then. I really appreciate my friends for taking me there. It would be a long time before I see them again.
